There was a time when kitchen bar stools were considered somewhat dated – a little bit "old hat." They were the sort of thing you might find in houses that were a little bit retro – either intentionally or because they had not had a new kitchen fitted in far too long.
Things never went so far that you would actually be mocked for having them, but you were unlikely to seek them out or see them recommended in the latest interior design magazines unless "retro" was a specific goal.
